i am still in shock….just turned on the telly and grazed past uk tv (morecombe and wise)
it was their musical guest..i don’t know who she was; but she was a vision in an orange chiffony kind of thing..
that’s ok..it goes with the era..what wasn’t ok was what was coming out of her mouth..it was an even more upbeat poppy caberetish version of aquarius/let the sun shine’ in than you would have ever thought possible..
it was hideous to such a degree as to be almost incomprehensible; and as such firmly crossed over into deep black comedy..(seriously, this was up there with/blew away, shatners’ iconic ‘lucy in the sky’ ..).
and the thing about this one is that this is a very, very long song/s…(and this felt like an extended mix)..and it wasn’t just the basic godawful singing..
it was the facial expressions and the phrasing, and the irrational/uncoordinated waving/flailing of the arms, and, and, everything…
so there i am; in mongoose hypnotised by snake mode..just frozen, unable to finger the remote…as she goes on and on and on about the age of aquarius..then suddenly, there is the change of tempo, and we are lurching off down the road of ‘let the sun shine in’ (being caught up in the moment and having forgotten about the traditional follow-on, i was caught by surprise and emitted an involuntary strangled scream/moan of horror..)
then when she broke into disco dancing mode during the instrumental break, it almost became just too much; this new wrinkle/facet of her talent, almost had me covering the eyes and diving behind the sofa..
and so on it went, to the last strangled vowel, and ‘woo-hoo’…
it was bloody marvellous and put a big smile on the face..i wish i had recorded it…….
