those who would probably benefit most from the cultural delights on offer at ak05, students and the young, have been priced out of the venues.
apart from affordability ($50 and up!), you’d have to figure in what else is on offer.
womad at the cost of about one and a half ak05 gigs has to be much better value for aspiring culture vultures/the mobile.
of course, any sneering and jafa bashing on wellingtons’ part should be tempered and countered with the knowledge that most of those who swell the arts festival coffers there, have their snouts firmly in the taxpayer funded trough. remove them and the festival would fall over.
(yet another reason to move the political capital back to the economic capital, where it belongs).
wouldn’t it make more sense to subsidise these gigs and fill them up at $30 ($25 concession) a seat, rather than charge market(?) prices and have them one third full?
(With the taxpayer/ratepayer left to pay the piper because of predicted revenues not being received etc etc.).
simple maths. 100 seats @ $30 = $3,000
33 seats @ $50 = $1,650!
everyone loses out with the current model
artists pissed off
promoter pissed off
council pissed off
punters pissed off
empty seats= tax and rates money, and cultural opportunities, flushed.
maybe a different model next time please?
