this is part of an ongoing campaign against the enormous amounts of sugar in our food.
i’m going to look at various brands over the coming weeks and point out to you all just what is in some of these healthy named and sounding products.
today it’s Fresh ‘n Fruity low fat yoghurt.
so far so good eh? good name; fresh + fruit =good, huh?
ok let’s look at the fruit first. 5% raspberry. is that all? yep, that takes care of the fruit part of it. (not sure how fresh that 5% of raspberrys is; i suspect it may be a syrup of some sort; you’d have to ask new zealand dairy foods about that)
of course there’s the usual flavours and preservatives; this one has the added benefit of gelatine (boiled down bones and animal bits).
oh, that’s right, the label tells us it’s low fat (good), and is a good source of calcium (only 25% of daily needs, but it’s there). it also tells us it’s bio plus (i’m not quite sure what that is).
but here’s the killer; this baby has 22.8 grams of sugar! over 3/4 of an ounce. you should weigh out 23 gramms of sugar sometime and see just how much that is.
this is what is sold to us, as being good to give our children.
that sucks. and if food manufacturers and retailers don’t get their acts together, govt will have to legislate , to stop them selling us this poison all tarted up as a healthy product.
i’m sure most of the country is addicted to sugar. and hey, excessive sugar intake = obesity.
