green mp sue bradfords’ private members bill is to go before parliament.
the bill calls for a repeal of section 59 of the crimes act..the is the exemption from the common assault laws, that allows parents/care-givers to physically punish children..
recent successful defences to child brutality charges using section 59 have involved the use of a horse-whip and a bamboo cane…..other successful defences have involved pieces of wood etc etc…
(i feel so strongly about this issue ..(having raised/raising, a couple of nippers with nary a smack..) i will blog the parliamentary debate in july..just so you know where they all stand on this, before you cast your votes..)
those who call for a program of public education on this issue are also correct..the answer to ending our horrific statistics in this area is a combination of educating, and the removal of the legislative approval of such actions enabled by section 59 of the crimes act..
