it’s not that often that you’ll find on this site a piece in praise of a transport leviathan.
but toll holdings, and in particular the boss paul little, deserve major kudos for an employment programme they are running called Second Step.
this programme provides employment/training options for former addicts/cons.
once clean, addicts and others wanting to mend their ways, are offered employment/mentoring for 12 months, or for two years if they want to study part time and work part time.
only their immediate boss and mentor know of their circumstances; and for these people the experience has also been life altering.
the scheme has been running for four years, and every former addict /con has been offered permanent employment after the probation period. by any measure, it is a resounding success.
little says the scheme has been a boost for staff morale.
the 20,000 employees, “..have become very proud of what we do.”
little also expresses irritation at other companies failure to take up what is a demonstrably successful programme.
