gisborne council has taken the strongest stand of any in the country against poker machines..
of course, the best example of a local initiative there against the dreaded pokies are the owners of the tolaga bay pub..they got rid of all their machines..
the couple say there were two reasons(they aren’t totally altruistic)..the overheads/cost on the machines is too high..and they say they were feeling disturbed/uncomfortable by locals coming in on payday and feeding the lot to the machines..
leaving nothing for rent or food..
and of course our (sort of) example of this new pokie-free pub is the helensville tavern..(north-west of auckland)..
and of course..to be in an environment free of the infernal beeping/cheeping/ringing noises they make is also a blessing…
you can now find this when you are driving through tolaga bay and helensville..and if you should happen to be there, you should really drop in and congratulate them on their enlightened policy/attitude..
and of course while you are there you can have a cooling/refreshing libation, and a bit of a chow down, eh..?
practical appreciation is always appreciated..eh..?
