i see much wailing and nashing of teeth and predictions of possible career end for nandor with the publication of the greens party list..(especially ryan on rnz just now, she was positively frothing (banging on a load of bullshit about he is no longer the media darling he was a few years ago..yada..yada..yada..)
ryan also once again attemts to paint tanczos as the one issue (cannabis law reform) mp.
anyone doubting the gravitas of tanzcos and viewing him as one-dimensional, should do a search on the heralds’ website under his name and read the number of think pieces he has done
on a wide range of issues..
and anyone doubting the popularity of tanczos obviously has not seen him in the public arena of late..in the past three weeks i have seen him at a workshop on restorative justice attended by a lot of industry professionals who were all impressed by and gave an unexpected hearty round of applause to his take on the complexities of the issues facing them..
then i saw him at an mps’ forum organised by one of the happy-clappy christian groups where about seven mps fronted up to a large number of the congregation and a couple of outsiders (me amongst them)
i like to watch audiences reactions at these sort of gigs and sat where i could see this..
to an audience in the main hostile to many of his liberal ideas tanczos spoke deftly, showing respect for their belief systems and presenting reasoned dialogue..this audience reacted as that at the justice workshop..
also, on that occaison, seeing the interaction with the other mps of all persuasions clearly indicated the respect they have for tanczos and his abilities..
these two experiences i have related are echoed at every appearance made by tanczos and i actually see nandor being put at possible peril of not getting back into parliament being a boost for the green party vote..
there are many out there who share my feelings, and do not want that to happen…and will vote and persuade others to vote appropriately.
so why is he lower on the list this time around?
i have noted previously he has been missing in action since the birth of his daughter…and many in the party (which is where that absence had been most notable, are perhaps feeling a tad miffed/rejected..)
also the green party has moved to the right of late in that (to my mind) fatally flawed pursuit of conjugal rights with labour…and some members/sections of the party are still vehemently conservative on drug reform issues..
interesting to see the strongest proponent in the party for whacking on the condom and going for it hammer and tongs with helen, donald, faintly damming in his support of tanczos..
donald is the titular head of that old school clique of mainly south island based party apparatchiks who have held a stranglehold on the party infrastructure and leadership and show absolutely no indication of being pulled off the stage while there is still a breath in their bodies..
this was the one thing ryan of rnz got right..the total lack of preperation for an orderly succession..but then she lost it again by singing the praises of delahunty and norman as possible leaders…aarrgghh..they both must have been doing some assidious butt kissing in that little world that is wellington..
delahunty operates as a prickly abrasive character of the school of politics..(take no prisoners)..and having seen in person her totally arrogant , demeaning style of negotion (which led to eventual vote split and banks and c&r screwing over auckland) i am gobsmacked she is touted by ryan as a possible leader..yes, she does talk loud..but is that enough..? i don’t think so…
whereas norman is of the “which way is the wind blowing, and what do they want to hear..” school of politics..he has forged a career from this ..
my first reaction to the news he had been appointed national campaign manager was “fuck, he must have been on a radical/major learning curve in the last little while, for them to pick him”..and a growing sense of dismay at my lack of confidence in him being up to/for the job…i really hope i am proved wrong on that last one..
so really, catherine ryan of rnz and others shouting the premature demise of tanczos should go stick their heads in a bucket and yell back at themselves, eh? ..they are talking a crock….
