enviro-warrior paul watson has turned 55….
here he has a look back…and does a bit of a ruminate on his take on the meaning of it all….
here he talks about an encounter with a whale….
“…..my life changed in 1975 from the penetrating eye of a whale that drove a message deep into my mind that my path was to listen to the laws of nature, to cherish diversity, interdependence….. and most of all… to cherish life…”
(i am fortunate to have echoed that experience when sailing on a yacht from australia to new guinea….a pod of whales (babies and all) surfaced all around us..in a relatively becalmed ocean…..
i was hanging off the front of the bowsprit..almost incoherent with excitement at this encounter..and trying to get as close as possible to them…
(my sailing companion..an experienced sailor ..as against me the neophyte..was experiencing the emotion of fear..more than anything else…he had very real safety concerns…i was oblivious to these…)
and hanging off that bowsprit i had the ‘eye’ encounter….an older whale on its side ever so slowly drifted past..and it bloody well looked/stared directly at me…i could ‘see into it’..(i still melt down …just thinking about it..)
my strongest take on that experience was one of connectiveness…..that experience i feel with many different animals……
and a large component of the reasons why i don’t/can’t eat/wear them…..
