my attitude on this has moved from a “wtf do we have to help them for..?..this is the richest most armed up country in the world…the global invaders…surely a little flooding wouldn’t faze them..”
but apparently so…the official reaction/movement on this has been gobsmackingly non-existant….and new orleans has slipped into anarchy…(and i mean..what would any of us do in those circumstances..with family to protect/feed..and nothing but broken promises from societies’ masters/betters….)
so the junkies and the crims have been reaping..(as they do)..and a third world post-disaster chaos has a grip on the city and environs…(previously best known for the civilising influences of the new orleans musical mix..)
you also have to ask the question that if new orleans/louisiana was a rich/white area of america..(like say..manhatten..)..would the responses have been quite as glacial…
i lived/travelled in america for awhile a way back..and one thing that struck me..(aside from the legendary friendliness/hospitality to strangers/travellers..pity we don’t do that very well..eh..?)… was how segregated america cities are…
and not just black/white..also latinos..and the various economic strata..i was privileged to work with/be friends with, latinos and this effected entry to their world..satuday nights down in the barrio were memorable..and were a telling example of how america is a composite of these self-contained/segregated worlds…
i now feel it is entirely appropriate for america to receive aid/help from poorer countries….
this because this will sheet home to americans(and us) just how vulnerable we all are to natural disasters..and our worlds slipping into the chaos we are seeing in new orleans…
this will shake the former certainties of america/americans(and us)..the insularity/arrogance that is such a large part of their/our worldview..
and attempting to take a long view..it may well be decided to just give the city back to the elements…new orleans has had a constant battle/fear of the elements.. (when the levee breaks..?)
and with global warming only promising more weather extremes rather than less…new orleans may be just left to sink….
