hand in hand with the clean green myth is the denial of a class system in new zealand..
and contrary to a sub-myth that our system, if it exists at all, is a recent phenomenom, you can trace the origins of this self-delusion back to the early days of colonisation..
y’see this classless society was part of the myth that was marketed to prospective migrants in britain by the new zealand company..a hook to lure them to the other side of the world..a place where the cruelties and inequities/restrictions of the british class system were left behind..
of course, the physical evidence here that the reality denied the myth can be seen in something as integral/basic as the size of streets in auckland and other cities/towns….
the middle/upper classes got the wide boulevards,(irish servants and all)..the workers got sewerage riddled alleyways/hovels in ponsonby/freemans bay…so it goes…
