this is a column from susan st james on how this government has done nothing in two terms of office to help those worst off..
to my mind, this is the shame of this government..a combination of clarks’ dragging the party to the right, and a fear of reactionary backlash, (and indifference?), has meant this supposedly caring government has done nothing for those lives devastated by shipleys’ gutting of the social welfare system..
and perhaps the most prescient words ever uttered by shipley were in her valedictory speech where she noted those on the other side of the house who had railed longest and loudest at her at that time, had, since they were in a position to undo some of her changes , done absolutely nothing..
believe me, for those trying to survive the life of extreme financial stress and rolling crises that is life on a domestic purposes benefit, the recent publicity about the couple down the line struggling on fifty something grand a year left them gape-mouthed, and muttering the prayer “i should be so unlucky..”
(disclaimer: through circumstances somewhat beyond my control i have lived that life of extreme financial stress and rolling crises for the last six years….
but i am still firm in my belief that the option currently being hawked by this government , all day child care, is just not an option, for too many reasons to list here..a hint at these reasons can be found later in this bulletin in the story on fatherhood)..(see: ‘men stepping up to the plate.’.)
btw the greedy mewlings of the right for more, more, (in the form of tax cuts), combined with their benificiary bashing rants, dosen’t wash that well in this neighborhood..a pox on them..
