greenpeace activists are camped out on the roof of the marsden B power station southeast of whangarei.
the power company has applied to convert the mothballed station to burn coal. (830,000 tonnes coal and 2.17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year)
the police say they don’t have the skills to dislodge the protestors; so this one could go on for awhile.
the occupation has helped galvanise and focus the local communities opposition to a coal burning, carbon dioxide belching behemoth in their midst.
they are marching today.
