one of the compensations for starting work early each day is that i get to see the previous evenings Marae, but with subtitles..
this morning they had two really interesting items; one on the labour maori mps, and what they are doing to try to retain the maori seats..and a piece on the opening of a flash new kohanga reo in manurewa..
this particular kohanga reo started life 21 years ago in a garage, and is potent and moving testament to what a few people with a good idea and a common will can achieve..
that i and the rest of the non-maori speaking country can only gain these insights into our shared cultures/country by watching tv at some ungodly hour of the morning pisses me off , somewhat..
surely, if only in the name and pursuit of racial harmony and cross cultural understanding Marae could/should be subtitled for the evening prime-time broadcast?
i mean, we’re not talking bloody rocket science here, are we?….
and could the subtitlers please enclose their words in a box; so we don’t have to suffer the linguistic version of russian roulette by having words disappear/blend into the background?…
once again, surely not rocket science?…
