those with an image of the polish pope as a conservative icon would be no doubt surprised to see, in his career synopsis on the bbc, file footage of vehement denunnciations of the injustices and evils visited on the poor of the world by economic and political hierachies…
should be required viewing for those of a religous tinged neo-conservative bent, who perhaps seek spiritual succour/approval for their temporal efforts..
he has been a significant figure for the last twenty-six years..his role in supporting the solidarity movement in his native poland is credited with helping in the push that ended communist rule..
he is also significant for his attempts at reconciliation with the orthodox churchs and the muslim world..
but of course, he will also be remembered as the pope who halted moves to liberalise the church..wether this has been good for the health/strength of the church will be up for debate..
