tamihires’ (exclusive) appearance on close-up last night was an indicator of the power shift in the relationship between the media and subject matter..
the host obviously stepped outside his brief (as set by tamihire) and asked an awkward question..tamihire responded by barking at him that he had agreed not to ask any questions about that and that he(tamahire), had this pre-show agreement on tape…the host just forgot about his question, held a fixed/glazed smile, and quickly moved onto a safer subject..whoar!
so what does this tell us? current affairs shows will enter into pre-show negotiations/agreements on subject matter covered in their subsequent interview, and allow subjects to tape this agreement..and use it as an onscreen weapon to shut down lines of question? double whoar!
may i digress for a moment and say this, if true, totally sucks, and means current affairs shows (close-up in this case), can have no credibility as far as the audience is concerned..
this to me, is far and away the most important revelation to come out of this particular little beat up…and some explanation/clarification from tvi, tv3, and prime is due, coupled with an assurance this did not/will not happen again..
i would also like to point out that one of these shows paying for exclusivity over some puff piece is one thing..distortion/manipulation of the political dialogue/debate essential to the health of democracy is something entirely different, and cannot be countenanced..
