i haven’t really commented on the above for the following reasons..
coming from where i am, (vegan, animal welfare/rights supporter), i of course support any initiative that lessens the suffering of sentient beings, but have a couple of issues with what i see as selectivism/speciesism..
yes, whales are stunning creatures; (some time back i had the privilege of sailing from australia to new guinea on a yacht, and had the scary/exhilerating experience of a pod of whales, babys and all, surfacing all around us..whoar!..my only animal/mammal experience that topped that, was being kissed,(twice), by a dolphin; but i’m saving that one for the book..eh?..:)
but you see, i think calves are stunning, beautiful creatures also; and it rips me up that they are brutalised, butchered, and eaten, as a given..
and as a student of irony, i am somewhat bemused by the sight of the likes of chris carter emoting all over the screen over the sufferings of these sentient beings, knowing full well he and most of the delegates have recently, and will, chow down vigorously on other sentient beings/mammals;.. beings who have suffered the well-documented horrors of the factory farms..seperation from offspring..suffering, and early death..
(or maybe they only eat organic/humane meat; another oxymoron..)
i wonder..do you think these ironies/questions/inconsistancies trouble them at all..?
other notable vegan-oriented ironies are..
of course, the afor-mentioned self-rightous organic carnivores..(y’know..’the animal i am about to eat lived a long and happy life..and we played some brahms for it and gave it a kneck-rub before we offed it..you can taste the difference, eh?”)
the green party of course, has it’s own section in this story..about ten years ago my suggestions that a vegetarian option be offered at green party do’s was met with rolling eyes by most..
only one green mp (nandor) is vegetarian..
the green spokesperson on the welfare of sentient beings, (sue kedgley), eats them..(organic, if possible, not if not, of course)..
green party co-leader fitzsimons favourite meal is chowing down on a baby cow(organic, of course), from down on her farm..(mmm, do they taste better if you helped with their birth, and know them..?)
and shades of, (self-titled), animal rights activist bridget saunders; the green party parliamentary staff recently had a raffle where possum-fur nipple -warmers were a prize..(sigh..still so far to go..eh?)
then you have the ngo’s..the glaring, howling example here, of course, being greenpeace bbq’ing baby cows, and chooks, and lambs, as a fundraiser to help baby whales..cor!..
(once again, do you think they ever ponder the inherent ironies/contradictions in their lives/stances..?)
so for all these reasons i find some difficulty in building up a selective head of steam over the whales..save in a mildly begrudging incrementalist sorta way, eh?..
