Questions to Ministers
peters..the speaker..and brownlee have a procedural squabble..
peters launchs into a long rambling disconnected rant about why he didn’t know he knew about the air new zealand charter flights..
(did anyone ‘get’ that..?..i didn’t..!..(heh-heh..!..)
brownlee makes the (perfectly reasonable) point that peters is abusing the ‘personal statement’ facility of parliament..and should be making a ministerial statement..
cullen then points his long rambling 5 cents worth..
the speaker then gives a long rambling ‘ruling..threatening to throw a couple of mps out..
(i kid you not..!..this is how they spend this (valuable?) time..)
peters then bangs on and on about how it ‘wasn’t his fault’..building up a decent head of steam on the way..
DIANNE YATES to the Minister of Defence: Has he received any reports on the war in Iraq?
goff dosen’t ‘look good’..crowing at key over his ‘the war is over’ gaffe..
by citing death and injury stats in a triumphant voice..)
goff then settles a bit..and gets into a serious flaying of key..
brownlee then reels off a list of labour identies’ own ‘war is over’/’post-war’ statements..
(gets a (deserved)round of applause…heh-heh..!
brownlee ‘got’ goff..!..go figure..!..)
goff then gets back on the front foot..tearing into key..
the speaker then threatens to start throwing people out..if the heckling dosen’t lessen..
goff is just stomping all over the war-lies told by national..
(brownlee gets in another one-liner against goff..
but goff just uses that as a platform to put the boot into key..yet again..
(brownlee is obviously auditioning for open-mic night at the comedy club..and is using parliament to ‘polish’ his act..)
JOHN KEY to the Prime Minister: Does she stand by her statement that “If you look at some of the things we have done this term, it has taken a while to build up the kitty for a substantial tax package. It has taken a while to build up the kitty for Working for Families. It has taken time to work up the kitty for interest-free loans and the early childhood programme. So undoubtedly there will be areas we will build on for next time, which will be new.â€; if so, why?
it’s key vs clark..
key accusing clark of ‘hoarding surpluses’..
clark then turns on key..over his 2005 tax policies..
clark is doing ‘withering’..(and dressed all in black..!..oo-err..!..)
clark is riding on labours’ ‘record’..(shakey ground there..!..eh..?..)
interesting watching key..a politician whose ideologies/politics would impact the most on the poor..
doing this ‘standing up for the battlers up from struggle st’ ‘routine’..
(quite the ‘dislocating’ experience..)
(was that it..?..from key..?..)
R DOUG WOOLERTON to the Minister of Finance: What is the current value of State-owned assets in New Zealand, and what was the total value of revenue generated from those assets in the last financial year?
cullen then does his deputy-dawg number..in a further flailing of nationals’ privatisation plans..
and the ‘borrowing to build’ ethos trumpeted by key/national..
cvullen does a very effective warning of privatised assets ending up in wealthy ‘furrinners’ hands..
(a message that resonates like a big bell to any of us mug-punters..with a memory..eh..?..)
Hon BILL ENGLISH to the Minister of Finance: What is the cumulative total of any operating balance surpluses for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007?
(english has this annoying habit of ‘the pregnant pause’..(as his eyes dart about the room) between being called on by the speaker..and actually speaking..
(it annoys the hell out of the speaker..that much is obvious..)
cullen then reels off what would have been the actual impacts on us of nationals’ 2005 policies..
(a line that ‘bites’:..’when national left office..one third of new zealands’ children lived in poverty’..)
and national really are turning into a one-trick-pony..eh..?
they are fast finding out that their tax-cut promises are the only policies that don’t scare the hell out of the rest of us..
english tries a mano a mano confrontation with cullen..(he shouldn’t have bothered..)
heather roy ‘tries’..(‘honest hard working kiwis deserve tax cuts..’)..and is trounced by cullen..
STEVE CHADWICK to the Minister of Local Government: What reports, if any, has he received on the uptake of the Rates Rebate scheme for the new financial year?
burton burbles something about rates..(sorry..!..missed it..!..my eyes glazed over..and my mind went into (involuntary) neutral..)
Dr the Hon LOCKWOOD SMITH to the Prime Minister: Does she stand by her statements that she had no plans to investigate matters Dr Ingram was unable to resolve because she did not consider further expenditure of public money was warranted?
the ‘field affair’ is chewed over at length..
field asks the member ‘to withdraw and apologise’..(for his impugning of fields’ good name’
(leaving all in a stunned silence..)
(clark asks if a national party identity is still a pot-smoker..(good grief..!..helen gets all ‘down ‘n dirty’..)
(the speaker has to take advice..field dosen’t get his apology..)
field then asks clark a supplementary question..(she seems somewhat offended/surprised at this ‘affront’..)
KEITH LOCKE to the Prime Minister: Will New Zealand be following the example of the European Union and the United States by imposing sanctions on either imports from Burma or investment in Burma, or freezing any assets of members of the Burmese regime held in New Zealand?
clark says ‘wait for the u.n’..
locke makes the point that china will veto any un actions against burma..
and asks why are we still importing teak furniture from burma..furniture made under virtual slave-conditions..
..and furniture banned/blocked by european countries..(!)
locke also notes that our ‘super’ fund invests in total oil..which is cited as a supporter of the burmese regime..
clark gives this (astonishing) reply..(twice!)..
that if we disinvest in burma..that ‘asian oil companies will rush to fill the vaccuum’..(?)
Hon MAURICE WILLIAMSON to the Minister of Transport: Does she believe some new roads in New Zealand could be built as public-private partnerships; if so, when does she expect to see the first of these occur?
williamson and king have a bit of a wrangle..
(and king (triumphantly) promises tolls on new roads..(!)..(what’s to be ‘triumphant ‘ about there..?..eh..?..)
peter brown does a good slamdunk on williamson..citing his ‘stuffing up’ of every aspect of everything when he was minister of transport..(heh-heh..!..)
king cites williamson as a ‘hopeless’ minister of transport..
peters cites previous williamson utterances on his desire to privatise all roads under four private companis..(!)..and this policy was written by former nat mclay..who is now waiting the wings..as the head of macquarie bank..ready to snaffle up govt assets should national get into power..
DARREN HUGHES to the Associate Minister of Health: What action is the Government taking to enhance health services in rural and provincial New Zealand?
ryall and o’connor wrangle over rural health services..
nationals’ ‘let the market rule’ ethos over health is rubbished..as illogical/irrational/impractical..
Hon MURRAY McCULLY to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: How many reports from the Combined Threat Assessment Group have been received by his office since his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs and how have those reports been dealt with?
the air new zealand charters..again..
(mc cully is in camera..henare..behind him..awakes from his somnambulant pose..straightens-up..and does a serious lean-in..to get into shot..heh-heh..!..)
(henare is at a 45% angle..ensuring his mug is on the screen..(as he also ‘mugs’ for the camera..behind mc cully
and he’d better be careful there..with his back..or else he’ll be off to the chiropractor..for an ego-driven back injury..)
HONE HARAWIRA to the Minister of MÄori Affairs: Me pehea ra a ia e mohio mena ka taea e te kaupapa hou hoko whenua Karauna te tiaki nga panga Maori?
Translation: How can he be sure that the new process for the sale of Crown land will protect Maori interests?
interesting when harawira stands to speak..cos’ sitting behind him is natty-boy clarkson..
(and i’d submit that between them they represent the two book-ends..of the old political schema..and the new political schema..)
harawira claims the new legislation does nothing to protect the interests of maori..and that the govt can still sell whatever it likes..
Hon BILL ENGLISH to the Minister of Justice: Does he stand by his statement regarding the regulated period contained in the Electoral Finance Bill that it “is longer than the Canadian but briefer than the United Kingdom’s, and it seemed an appropriate and reasonable period on balance.â€; if so, why?
english nails burton on hs mis-representations of other systems..to support his poxy election reform bill..
(burton is weaseling/squirming..and avoiding the crux of englishs’ question..
woollerton..as nz first toady..asks burton a patsy..
english loses focus..and does a pledge-card re-run..(duh..!..)
Questions to Members
CHRISTOPHER FINLAYSON to the Chairperson of the Justice and Electoral Committee: How many submitters were invited to give oral evidence to the Justice and Electoral Committee on the Electoral Finance Bill on Monday 17 September 2007?
finlayson notes that the house select committee will only meet for 15 minutes to make their final decisions..(!)
