(ed:..the above headline is my takeaway from this trainwreck…
the entire backroom team/staff..if they did not know enough – if they did not see how this could/did unfold in a very messy manner –
then they should lift their collective-arses – admit how they totally screwed-up – and offer to fall on their quills…
without going near the undeniable logic/urgency of the arguments turei presented..
i cannot not be left gobsmacked at the basic political/tactical ineptitude displayed by all..
now we don’t know the mechanics of how it all went down..and some may have argued vehemently against this move by/from turei..(as they bloody well should..)
maybe shaw and others doubted the case – and only supported turei post-revelations through solidarity….
and maybe we will never know if he never saw the pitfalls ahead..
tureis’ story need to be neat/tidy/contained – it was anything but that..the basic poverty-foundation of the story just did not hold up..
now turei knew this..(her own hubris in this matter is something to be marveled at..)
people around her in her political/private-life also knew this..knew that turei actually had physical/financial-support options denied most in that situation..
how did they know/think this would all not come out..?
how did they know/think that the rightwing would not be like ferrets on crack – digging for just such facts..?
and starting about five minutes after turei went public..?
how did they think that those ferrets on crack would not find what they were looking for..?…when it was there for all to see..
and that is why any backroom-adviser whom the greens rely upon – who was part of this process – who did not argue/warn of these bleeding-obvious looming-problems..in the strongest manner possible…and who just nodded along like an unthinking yes-person..
well..they should just walk..eh..?..if they are at all ‘honourable’..
having between them created a whole new benchmark in political epic-fail…
just as the greens were about to finally do what they have been waiting to do for so so long..
and if they won’t walk – fire them..!..and share their salaries amongst any who did speak out against this course of action..(for the story-failure reasons cited)..
(public showings in sackcloth and ashes is too good for them..those yes-people)
for be in no doubt..what turei was trying to do needs/needed to be done..
but turei was not the case-study to do that..
there are many out there who are forced into prostitution and the like/worse..just to survive..who don’t have widespread family support to fall back on..
..and a life for most on a benefit is a life of constant scrabbling..a life of/with little/no dignity..
tureis’ time of poverty was far too middle-class-in-temporarily-straightened-circumstances..to fit..
it was a world away from the lives/miseries of the truly poor/desperate..
those with no ‘future’ in sight/within coo-ee..)
In other words they should have been a whole lot more professional.
It may not be ideal or even acceptable that politics is a blood sport – that there is a mean streak in this country that couldn’t care less about ‘bludgers’ or that the media is often wilfully shallow in its coverage of complex issues.
But that’s how it is and if you’re not ready for the counterpunch you shouldn’t be in the game.
The Greens backroom team should probably quit too.
(ed:..tell me why they shouldn’t quit..)
