At present two of the main suppliers of herbal tinctures to the New Zealand market has wholesale prices of $23.90 and $25.70 respectively for a 200ml tincture (1:2) of Marrubium vulgare.
They use 1kg of herb in 2 litres of menstruum (partly using alcohol as a solvent).
So to make a 200ml bottle of herbal extract or tincture – 100g of herb is used.
Each healthy plant is likely to provide at least 200g of herb.
Two horehound plants can easily come to harvest in an area of one square foot.
‘Minimal harvest volume in this square foot would be 400g and worth say half the tincture price – say $12 x 4 – which is $48 for 400g’ says Christine.
‘There are 107,639 square feet in 1 hectare.
Price per harvest could be $5,166,672 per hectare’.
