(ed: what follows is jots on various election-outcome matters..)
the mandate: who has a mandate..?
i kinda feel i am inured to the simplistic-thinking patterns/vocalisations from much of the corporate/mainstream-media..
but this ‘mandate-question’ they are currently fretting over sets new benchmarks in inanities/irrelevancies – even for them..
the assumption most are making is that because national/the tories received the largest party vote – that they automatically have the right to form the next government – is just wrong wrong wrong..
just what is the mathematical-quandry for them that they cannot understand that a party calling for change (labour) – a party calling for even more change (the greens) – and a party that campaigned on major change (nz first) – who together gained a majority – that in some way their mandate for change is discounted/irrelevant..?
in favour of a tory party of no-change/just-more-of-the-same who got 46% of the vote..?
of course lab/grns/nz first have a mandate for both change – and to form a government – one that represents the majority of the country..who clearly want change..
why the fuck can these peanut-brained media-idjits/commentators not see/understand this..?..(even trotter has been swayed by this simplistic first past the post thinking – the drivel he spouted on the a.m. show today was something to behold..)
plus of course there is the added certainty that the specials will favour the left and take from the tories..
thus further cementing that mandate for change – and to form a centre-left coalition..
the other example of current simplistic/double-standard media-thinking is their calling any proposed lab/grn/nz first coalition a ‘three-headed-monster’..yet the current tory government is national/act/united/maori party – in their term ‘a four-headed-monster’..(!)..who for much of the time had a majority of one…
and really – my advice for any politics-addicts (like myself) is to taiho – to put yr feet up – take it easy – find a good bio to read – a netflix series to watch..
‘cos nothing is gonna happen until after the special-votes are counted/allocated…nothing…
time for time-off…
the bloviator-in-chief: media-division:
one certain winner from this election is duncan garner
he has cemented in his title of bloviator-in-chief…
this title of course previously switched between sean plunket and chris trotter – sometimes on a weekly basis..! – but garner has now made it his very own..
(and i must admit i was surprised by gareth morgan choosing plunket as his campaign-manager – such an old-school guy for what was clearly a new-school campaign – go figure..!..eh..?..did he even know how to turn on his computer..?..that plunket..?..not so much ‘cutting-edge’ as ‘shuffling-slippers’..)
garner has maintained a strong bloviating-record in/on his breakfast-telly show – but it was on the election-nite show that he set new benchmarks..
he just sat there banging out utter shite – which he would then repeat – seemingly endlessly..
all of course underpinned by his unique skill in greeting/repeating the bleeding obvious – all rendered in tones of incredulous discovery – on his part..
the other participants were left staring at his non-stop flapping-mouth – and then expected to respond to garners’ other dark-art – the third-leg of his bloviating-stool – his chronic over-use of the non-sequitur..
he does it all the time on his telly-show..the non-sequitur followed by garner doing expectant/panting-puppy impersonations..leaving his co-hosts to grasp for something/anything to say..
this he doled out on that election show – in spades..leaving his co-hosts staring/gasping at him – clearly wondering: ‘w.t.f. is he banging on about..?..the man is making no sense..!’
there is only one contender for this title from this election _ and that is metiria turei…
it was the initial rise in the polls for turei/the greens that sounded the death-knell for andrew little as leader..and the subsequent rise of jacinda ardern – and the subsequent poll-jump for labour..
(and i will repeat here my respect for andrew little – for doing the right thing – and thinking/acting for the greater-good – for his stepping aside – and for nominating ardern as his successor ..he deserves an award of his own..)
and it is in many ways down to turei that the centre-left is now sitting with a mandate for change/to form a government..
and if this does come about – this hoped-for-by-many/most coalition for change – i hope they all remember the role that turei has played – and that they find for her a suitable ‘job’ outside of direct government..
i dunno..!..how does poverty-tsar sound..?..tasked with overseeing what she/many have yearned to happen – for so long..
she’d be up for that – i reckon…
