Fears of escalating homeless numbers as report reveals growing pressure on public camping spots.
(ed:..on the final episode of the paul henry show – paula bennett crowed that her greatest accomplishment of the year was/is how she ‘has got on top of homelessness’/is housing the homeless..(!)
now this claim from bennett left me both gobsmacked and speechlesss andcould not be more of a stellar example of just complete cynical unadulterated bullshit – and makes her frontrunner for this years’ ‘big-lie-award’..)
Wilf Holt of Auckland City Mission said claims of a rising homeless population correlated with the mission’s findings.
He said rough sleepers and those sleeping in cars included members of the working poor who had jobs but couldn’t make ends meet.
‘I suggest that’s probably being replicated up and down the country’.
In Auckland there were probably more homeless than ever before – Holt said.
There were more than 300 sleeping rough within 3km of the Sky Tower earlier this year he said – but 10 or 12 years ago there were only 65 or 70.
Holt cited house prices as a big driver of homelessness but said several other social and policy factors played a role.
