The previous Labour government bought 105 LAVs from General Dynamics Land Systems Canada for $653 million.
They entered service in 2003.
One was destroyed in a bomb attack in Afghanistan and only some of the remaining 104 are regularly used.
Defence decided it didn’t need 20 of them in 2011 and they have been in storage at the Trentham Military Camp – north of Wellington – waiting for a new home.
OIA documents showed they were inspected by a foreign delegation in February last year – but that didn’t lead to anything.
(ed: let’s do some math here – they were bought in 2003 –
– these ones for sale – have been mothballed for seven years – so they got only eight years of use out of them (!)..
and the rest of them now are ‘hardly used’..(!)..and have been ‘hardly used’..(!)
and are now needing to be replaced..(!)
and isn’t the ‘needing to be replaced’ just the cherry on the cake..eh..?..
and of course nobody wants to buy these mothballed twenty – so they sure as hell aren’t going to be able to sell the remaining 104…are they..?
i’ve got an idea: why not turn them into a statue/memorial commemorating how the military and stupid politicians just piss our money away…?
i think we already have enough statues detailing the human cost –
– why not one detailing the financial-costs of this greatest of all human follies..?…militarism..)
