(ed: the ultimate-indictment on this show is that it just isn’t funny –
which is a surprise because lillys’ previous outing as a teenage australian girl/multiple-characters in ‘summer hill high’ was both nuanced and funny..
whereas this is crude/blunt-(as opposed to ‘sharp’) caricature/unfunny..
tho’ i do shy away from censoring it on the grounds of causing possible offence to the punchline-subject….in this case the tongan community..
if you pulled all the racial/national-caricature-based-pisstakes from comedy there would be little left..
british comedy has long had the french and the germans and the italians as running jokes – to be poked at will…
and me..?..i am a mix of (mean-spirited/grumpy/drunken) scots – (lazy/dumb) irish – and (unintelligible/stupid) welsh..
so..y’know..!…multiple-choice taking-offence is my option..
and how do we think the country of spain felt about manuel in fawlty towers..?..
did they laugh along ? – or did they ‘take offence’..?
billy t.k..?…the list goes on and on..
if every group who has had the piss taken out of it had the power to remove – just on those grounds – of some of them taking offence – the ouvre would be gutted into irrelevance..
so i can defend jonah on those anti-censorship grounds…
they are not a reason to pull it..
but i can’t defend it on humour-grounds..
and as i said – that comes as a surprise – that lilly has done something so unfunny in the wake of his stellar work in ‘summer hill high’…
(which i would urge readers to seek out/watch..)
but i really must warn/speak out against this knee-jerk/over-the-top reaction from the board of maori tv…censorship-powers clearly going to their heads..
and given all this publicity maybe a solution would be for maori tv to make it available online/on demand..?
then those who want it – can seek it out..
‘cos we all know that sense of humour is a very subjective/slippery-beast..and there will be some out there who will disagree with my dismissal of ‘jonah’…and who get enough from the shock of the recognition of a long-ignored/unexplored group – and who recognise the kernels of truth most comedies contain/are built on..
we should be very scared of small groups of people dictating what we all can see..
(did those now calling for censorship like ‘bro town’..?..or did they also ‘take offence’ there..?..)
where do you draw the lines..?
we should run like the wind from such ideas/arguments/reasons..)
Maori Television’s board had no knowledge controversial Australian comedy Jonah from Tonga would be broadcast on the channel and has vowed to axe it.
An email document obtained by RNZ has revealed high-level board concerns about the show – where a white Australian comedian dresses up as a Tongan student.
The draft document – which has been shared between Maori Television’s current board members – says they ‘regret not being made aware in time to prevent the first programme from going to air’.
It said Maori would ‘feel insulted if non-Maori painted their face and proceeded to belittle our people’.
‘We unequivocally apologise to our Tongan whanau’ said the document – which added that the broadcaster would never play the show again.
