Zebrafish appear to be as keen on opioid drugs as humans – according to a study that could help scientists discover new ways to treat addiction.
(ed: excuse me..!..getting fish hooked on junk will teach these experimenters on animals about human opioid-addiction..?..pull the other one..!..eh..?..they could just go and talk to a human-addict..and find out more/what they need to know..)
Scientists at Utah University trained the fish to swim over a yellow platform to trigger the release of some food.
When this happened a green light was also set off.
They then replaced the food with hydrocodone and discovered through a number of tests that the zebrafish were very keen on the opioid painkiller.
They swam over the platform when it released the drug much more often than when it produced food.
When the dose was reduced they increased the number of visits to compensate.
Normally zebrafish will avoid water that is too shallow but when the drug was on offer they disregarded their normal caution when the researchers reduced the level in the tank.
(ed: and this is how these experimenters on animals advance the sum of human knowledge/justify their existence/funding..
and you can bet it didn’t end well for those now addicted fish..eh..?..
‘cos..y’see..the thing with/about fish is that they have pain-receptors/central nervous systems very similar to humans..
and i’m picking these animal-experimenters just watched those fish suffer the miseries of opiate-withdrawals..
did i tell you how much i loathe those who perform unnecessary/usually cruel experiments on animals..?..
..just ‘cos they can..?)
