and to me it is just another example of how in this country we have got our attitudes/treatments for just about all drugs upside-down/arse-about-face..
(as a disclaimer of sorts i should note that i have reasonably extensive field-experience in most intoxicants – to the point now where gym/yoga tea/coffee are about my only drugs – so i feel i have a right to pine on this one..)
‘cos as a matter of fact it is the drug that williams spent the early part of his evening consuming is one that does serious harm to the user – and the drug he is charged with attempting to procure is far more benign/easy to kick than most others..
(once again – a disclaimer: i have ‘kicked’ tobacco/alcohol/barbiturates/heroin/cocaine/crack-cocaine..and i don’t use pot any more..(a drug i found to be an invaluable aid in helping with withdrawals from that other basket of drugs..)
and perhaps the easiest to stop using (aside from pot) was cocaine..
after consuming far more than my fair share for a number of years i just decided one day that i had had enough..and that was pretty much it..i just stopped..(once again using cannabis to stave off what were minimal withdrawal symptoms..)..and what there was to it was over in a couple of days..
and if i were to rank drugs on a scale of 1-10 as per hard to kick..i would have cocaine at about 1-2..heroin at about 8 – tobacco at about 4-5..and the drug williams was using (with the approval of society) earlier in the evening i would rank much higher than our approving societal mores would have it..at somehere between alcohol and heroin..
and as for the long-term damage caused by these different drugs i should note that i dropped alcohol in my early twenties..
and that after using herculean amounts of heroin/cocaine etc for many years – (my favourite was heroin/cocaine mixed together – the mis-labelled ‘speedball’..more on ‘speed’ in a mo’.)…and then stopping..i went to university and attained a masters degree..
now had i used similar amounts of alcohol for so long there is no way i would have been able to then go on and study..
i would be one of those rheumy-eyed ones who inhabit/lurk/spend their days in those (also mis-labelled) ‘sports-bars’..shaky-hands/brains and all..
so you see what i am saying when i say that the drug williams used earlier in his nite-out in paris – is far more dangerous/damaging than the drug he is charged with attempting to procure..
and just coming back here for a moment..i would note that crack-cocaine was about the most ‘obsessive’/addictive of all the drugs i used..the one that scared me the most..
and that the current drug-scourge (aside from alcohol) in this country is ‘p’..which is the low-rent cousin of crack-cocaine..so my heart goes out to those who are hooked on that evil muck..(a defrocked irish catholic priest/meth-addict talked me out of ever going near that crap – and for that i will be forever grateful to him)
and of course meth is much much worse than (powdered) cocaine…and my formula/solution to help people get off ‘p’ would be to substitute the much more benign (powdered)-cocaine to see them through the initial withdrawals (and of course to also give them as much cannabis as they want/need to also act as a palliative through the ‘kicking’ phase..and as a longterm aid to help keep them away from meth/’p’..)..and then to gradually reduce their cocaine-doses.
and of course no method is perfect – and there will be those who lapse..but this is a far better solution than what is currently on offer.
and if i could digress for a moment into something that really angers me – that is how those addicted to opiates are currently given the life-sentence of a government-approved addiction to the much harder to kick..methadone..now how fucked up is that..?..
(i was warned off methadone by an article i read in scientifc-american on how it is more addictive than heroin…and from observing how it turned big-brains into zombies..it is a vile drug – that methadone..)
and with them i would put them onto medical-morphine as a bridge-drug…to get them off the far worse methadone..and then gradually cut-down the doses of that (easier than methadone to kick)..and of course once again..doing as i did..giving them as much cannabis as they want/need to help with/in that process..both in the withdrawal stage and long-term..cannabis..after all..is a medicine/is the safest of all the intoxicants.
so as you can see/i hope i have proven..we totally have our attitudes to most drugs arse-about-face..
and this moral-panic/mass handwringing over ali williams attempting to score some cocaine – couldn’t be a clearer example of this..)
Williams and a former Wallabies player James O’Connor were arrested near the Arc de Triomphe over the weekend for allegedly possessing cocaine and have been in custody since.
News agency AFP reported the two men had now been charged.
L’Equipe said Wlliams would appear before a tribunal this week charged with drug-buying, while O’Connor would be charged with drug use.
Both men had been released from custody – L’Equipe reported.
(ed:..here in new zealand the only treatment available is methadone – a drug more addictive/harder to kick..than heroin.essentially a life-sentence of addiction..
that seems to make sense..eh..?..
(disclaimer:..i was addicted to heroin/cocaine for about 20 yrs – i have been ‘clean’ now for longer than that..i used abstinence/cold turkey and herculean amounts of cannabis/hashish to kick my habit..it seems to have worked..but cannabis-prohibition in new zealand means doctors treating addicts cannot prescribe/advise this much safer alternative to methadone..
in just another example of how just about all drug policies in this country are arse about face/fucked up..)
In a light-filled office next to the exam rooms the four OBIC clinicians discussed the patients on the day’s schedule. (All patient names have been changed to protect their privacy.)
There was Vicki – the 35-year-old Cambodian woman who was on buprenorphine but like many patients was also addicted to meth.
The day before she had hobbled in – legs swollen – red and shiny.
It was cellulitis – a bacterial skin infection common among meth users.
‘I kept trying to explain to her that it was related to the meth—that it was because her heart is giving out but I don’t know if she got it’ said Mike Silva – a genial psychiatric nurse – in a worried voice.
He put her in a cab and directed it to a nearby hospital.
There was the 37-year-old regular who was sometimes so high and paranoid on meth that he hid behind the cars on Howard Street.
They left him granola bars at the front desk in hopes of bringing him in.
There was a tall shy man named Nathan who was addicted to heroin for 12 years before coming to OBIC.
He hadn’t used since and he was about to ‘graduate’ to another clinic.
The staff – knowing he was nervous about the transition – would personally walk him to his first appointment.‘Homeless people – sometimes they lose track of time.We get out there and we don’t give a fuck about anything except getting high and getting our next fucking fix’ said Patrick. “‘now I give a shit’.
And there was Patrick—who to a casual observer faced so many long-term interwoven – seemingly insurmountable barriers – that any attempt of treatment seemed futile.
He started using regularly at 15 when he was living on his own and working in lumber yards in Northern California’s Humboldt County.
He’d been homeless on and off for years – living under bridges and in abandoned homes.
In addition to heroin he used meth and he made money to pay for the drugs by stealing bikes and selling weed.
The report argues that no penalties at all should attach to simple drug possession.
(op-ed:..i have written previously how i was addicted to opioids for about 15 years..(20 yrs if you count relapses and the like..)
and i have now been clean of opioid-addiction for much longer than i was addicted..
and one of the major/most effective tools that helped me shake that addiction was cannabis…for years i smoked large amounts constantly…
(i never went near that vile/more addictive govt-supplied narcotic ..methadone..that life-long sentence handed out so readily by successive govts..fact: methadone is more addictive/harder to shake than heroin..(how fucked up is that..?..)
the solution is worse than the problem..and my ‘solution’ would be to move those methadone addicts over to morphine..and then wean down from that..(but that’s another story..)
and that smoking pot to stave off relapse desires clearly worked..as i am now teetotal..and am fit/healthy..and a million miles from heroin/opioids..
why i bring this up is because just recently i discovered an old school friend is now in a home for the elderly in the provinces..and has dementia..so i went and saw him and took him out for a couple of outings..and it is sad..he and i were both kids who survived by being smart-arses..he was quick with the one-liners and the like..and now he does not remember the name of his daughter..it is beyond sad..
now this old friend and i share a past – because he also became a heroin addict…
but where i turned to cannabis to help me stay clean..he..like many other former opioid-addicts..turned to alcohol as his salve..(in the brains of alcoholics alcohol turns into an opioid..this is part of what differentiates alcoholics from social-drinkers/users..)
and it is this legal/promoted/celebrated drug alcohol..that has caused his dementia/wrecked his life…
once again..how fucked up is that..?…he would have actually been better to continue using opioids…he would not now have dementia..
so the govt-solution to opioid addiction is the vile methadone..and the (to my mind) equally vile alcohol..
and the salve that actually works..and should be handed out to anyone addicted to/trying to kick anything..cannabis…is an illegal drug…that you get arrested for possessing…
once again..seriously..!..just how fucked up is that..?..)
the linked to article calls for global decriminalisation of possession of all drugs.
and is a call for sanity in a world/issue riven with solutions that are just so so wrong..on every level..
‘drink up..!..it’ll only cause dementia..eh..?
smoke pot..?…and you are arrested..!’
once again/for the last time..just how fucked up/wrong is that..?..)
