(ed:..i hafta say – there is much in this announcement/promise to like..
and the greens will still again – after an absence – get my party vote – that in no small part because of what was done to metiria turei – it’s the least i can do – to register my strong feelings about that process/outcome – which at the very least set a new benchmark in the-punishment-not-fitting the-crime.
metiria turei would have made a cracker of a minister for social development..that is indisputable..
so the greens have that locked down..
but were not those imperatives in place – a jacinda ardern led labour would be a possibility for my vote – a definite possibility..and after not having voted for them since they lurched off-course – and down that dark/dank/dead-end alleyway of neoliberal-incrementalism..all those decades ago..
and i have noted before that nothing will change in labour/nz until they renounce neoliberalism – and pivot to democratic socialism..taking blueprints for social reform from the likes of bernie sanders and jeremy corbyn..
some people in labour promised me this was indeed what was happening/coming up in a labour led by ardern..
and we are only at the beginning of this election campaign..with much still to come in the way of policy..but from what we have seen so far..they don’t appear to have been bullshitting me..those labour people..
and i particularly like the commonsense shown in this policy – the mix of social/first-home-owner dwellings – from three down to one-bedroom..and at realistic-cost..
built on land already owned by housing new zealand..
labour are basically offering a solution to the housing crisis..
whereas the tories are offering no solutions – just a twenty-dollar a week tax-cut – and some more roads..(meh..!…)
(tho’ in fairness/the quest for objectivity – i should note i do like the tory policy of $18 being the maximum charge for going to the doctor – that is well overdue…and if they don’t have something similar already labour and greens should move toot suite! to plug that hole in their policies..)
and tho’ my personal politics are so left i sometimes scare myself – i am also enough of a realist to know that no meaningful change was going to come our way – until/before labour moved away from neoliberalism..
..and looked back to what made them great in the first place..
..under jacinda ardern..this is what seems to be happening..
..as i said – there is much to like..)
‘Palmerston North is a growing vibrant city that urgently needs more houses.
With house prices in Palmerston North up 23 per cent in the past two years – it’s getting hard for people to buy a place of their own.
‘We can tackle home affordability and homeless with a positive plan for Palmerston North.
We’ll build a mix of half state houses and half modern starter homes – which we’ll sell to first homebuyers at cost.
The homes will be built on bare land owned by Housing New Zealand on Botanical Road – Crewe Crescent and Rugby Street.
‘We expect to be able to deliver terraced three-bedroom starter homes for $275,000 and less than that for one and two bedroom homes.
All over the country we have a serious housing shortage.
It’s time to fix the housing crisis.
Labour will build affordable starter homes and state houses for families in need – while cracking down on speculators who jack up house prices.
