High-profile MPs Jacinda Ardern and Julie Anne Genter will battle it out for Mt Albert.
(ed:..of course this has long been a safe labour seat – but the greens got 25% of the vote last time – and this is a bye-election – and thus much harder to predict how the vote will go..
and i see the wild card in this bye-election being gareth morgan and his new political party..
political-logic would seem to dictate that morgan will run – as it will give him a platform from which to present/debate his suite of game-changing policies to the electors – in the run-up to the general election later in the year..
and i see him as taking votes from labour – not from the greens..
and of course the other unknown is where will the traditionally tory-voters place their support/votes? – as there is a political-vacuum for them because of the national party not standing a candidate..
and once again i can’t see their votes going to labour/ardern – they must be tempted to act as a spoiler for labour/ardern and to vote for either genter – or gareth morgan..
so taking all of these unknowns/factors into account – this is shaping up to be a most fascinating political contest/byelection..
and one very difficult in which to predict any/the eventual outcomes..)
Labour’s Jacinda Ardern is backing herself to win the Mt Albert by-election and even her biggest competition – Green MP Julie Anne Genter – has accepted it’s an uphill challenge.
The Green Party haven’t held a seat since former co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons won Coromandel in 1999 – so Genter is well aware she’s the underdog.
