(ed:..well done..!..successive tory/labour govts..!
we’re number one..!..in numbers of homeless..
this is what both the tories and labour and the preceeding decades of neoliberalism has wrought.
from shipley/richardson gutting support for sole-parents and other benificiaries through to helen clark further tearing away support for the poorest – doing nothing to alleviate poverty for nine long years – and engaging in a campaign of denigrating/marginalising the poor..
(does anyone recall the ‘deserving’ and ‘undeserving’ families mantras she chanted..?..the former worthy of help – the prescription for the latter being to be left to rot..)
this is why both main political parties in nz are in the dock for creating the shitstorm of poverty/homelessness we now have..
the tories are asking us to vote for even more of the same..
and the labour party has the mountain-range of their neoliberal-history to scale – before voters can be expected to believe/trust them again..)
Social Housing Minister Amy Adams is rejecting an American University survey that puts New Zealand at the top of a list of developed countries for homelessness.
Yale University has released a list of developed countries ranked on the number of homeless people per capita – which has New Zealand at the top – followed by the Czech Republic and Australia.
It found about 40,000 people are either living on the street – in emergency housing or shelter considered sub-standard.
