ed: this link will take you to a (surprisingly) balanced look at vegetarian/vegan dogs..
there is an example of a thriving vegan dog and various experts weighing in on the viability of doing this..
and it ends with a pig-dog owner scoffing at the very idea..(more on that in a mo’..)
i feel i should note here that i have had vegan dogs for a couple of decades..
my first vegan dog died a couple of years ago..at age 18..and was in glowing good health for those years..
another one died last year..and he was 14…(also ‘glowing good health’ etc..)
i amused myself a few times over the years by asking vets what they think about the idea of a vegan diet for dogs – as a general inquiry – and then watching them meltdown..
and then i would introduce to my beloved lucy..
the last vet i did this to looked at my shiny lucy and stammered : ‘what shampoo do you use to get her coat so shiny’..?
i then slayed him by saying: ‘i haven’t bathed her in years – i find a healthy vegan diet obviates that need’..
i left him standing – gape-mouthed – his whole belief-system in upheaval – as he couldn’t deny the evidence before his eyes..
but that amusement to one side – i have proven that dogs can be happy/healthy on a vegan diet…
with my two (now deceased) dogs – they would sit beside me in the kitchen as i chopped up blocks of tofu – waiting for me to throw them lumps of it..
(and of course anyone wanting the ‘how to’ details can google it..all you need to know is out there..while there you could also ask for picture-galleries of vegan dogs – for photographic-proof..)
and back to this pig-dog owner (in link) – who scoffs at the very idea of vegan dogs..
it should be noted that most pig-dogs do not have very nice lives..
they are kept chained-up/in cages as a form of sensory-deprivation – so that the hunt is the only good thing/excitement in their lives..
this is deliberate..
and funny story..!..the two dogs i am currently caring for/sharing my life with are re-homed ex-pig dogs…
one of them is 15 years old – and was an emotional wreck when he came to me – i veganised him overnite – and eight months later he is a picture of happy/healthy dog…his ears used to be permanently flattened on his head – this is no longer the case…his tail never wagged – this is no longer the case…my new nickname for him is ‘wagger’..(and he is currently snoring on his day-bed – a couple of metres away from me..)
and lying entangled/curled up next to him on the bed is the eight year old ex-pig dog i took on a couple of months later..
they are both big-boys (i don’t need to bend to pat them..) and the eight yr old looked like two dogs welded together when he came to me..he has a big head – and he was so emaciated he had the body of a greyhound..large kennel-sores (from lying on concrete/dirt all the time) on his hips/knees etc…
and tho’ a physical wreck – he was mentally intact/un-scarred – and was a lovely/open/friendly boy from day one..
he no longer looks like that..
suffice to say he is ‘glowing’..
so really…said pig-owner (and those scoffing at the very idea of vegan dogs)..
they really don’t know what they are talking about..
and if i could just finish with a pitch for other people to re-home ex-pig dogs..
the case for them is that they are usually highly trained..trained to be friendly to everything excerpt pigs..
and they may look as rough as guts – mine have body-scars/ripped ears and the like..
but they make wonderful/friendly companion-animals..
and these two have taken to their new lives of comfort/untrammeled luxury…
..like it has always been this way for them..
