(disclaimer: i have been vegetarian then vegan for over thirty years – and i do like my (wholemeal) carbs..
..and just referring to the premature-ageing outcomes from too much protein/the paleo-diet – i would note i know more than a few people who have followed such diets as mine for longer than me – and the one thing they all have in common is rude good health –
– and looking much younger than they actually are -(great skin-tone/hair etc..)
– and i know this ‘evidence’ is only anecdotal but i find/have found it to be quite compelling/convincing..
He says a protein-heavy hunter-gatherer diet is actually no longer what we need – because scientists have found that too much protein accelerates ageing and ‘the degeneration of supportive coordination’.
That didn’t matter for the hunter-gatherers because they died early anyway for other reasons such as accidents – infections and starvation.
But it matters for us.
‘The work also shows why some popular diets that are designed to avoid carbs by increasing protein intake might in the long term be doing tremendous harm – for example the paleo diet’ he says.
He endorses the official Australian and NZ advice that a balanced diet should comprise 15 to 25 per cent protein – 20 to 35 per cent fat and 45 to 65 per cent carbohydrates – as long as they are the right kind of carbs.
‘If the carbs come from natural food sources that are tied up with fibre – that prevents us from over-eating’ he says.
(ed:..i was also cheered the other day to read that the people in the area of japan where longevity is rife – that save for their having fish whereas i get protein from vegan sources – that the carb/protein/fat they consume is pretty much in the same proportions as a healthy/balanced vegan diet..
..once again – ‘just saying!’..
..and i would note those people i have observed have been living their diet for decades – whereas the likes of that paleo-pete are relatively new onto the scene..
..and is is just me – or is paleo-pete looking more gaunt/older than he should..?..for his years/age..?
once again – ‘just saying!’..)
