Auckland Grey Power branch president Anne-Marie Coury fears rising general patronage on the city’s buses and trains will put extra pressure on the afternoon concession – given the growing numbers of ‘baby boomers’ turning 65 and obtaining SuperGold Cards.
‘Often people are getting frustrated because the buses are full and so are the trains at certain times’ she said.
‘So I think they [Auckland Transport] are seeing this [review] as a really convenient way of dealing with several things in one hit’.
But Ms Coury said removing the afternoon concession would hit pensioners hard – especially those using public transport for medical appointments or to fetch grandchildren home from school.
Auckland Transport’s Metro general manager Mark Lambert hopes recommendations from the review will be ready to go out for public consultation by mid-2016.
He said no decisions had been made yet but the greatest pressure on Auckland’s public transport was in the morning rather than afternoon travel peak.
(ed:..that one should take bout five minutes to examine and then dismiss..surely..?
..the complexites/complications/lengths of time taken to travel around auckland by public transport should be enough in its’ own right to see the afternoon fare concession canning idea itself binned..
..then there is the (conceded) fact that the buses are not full during that afternoon peak..(so pensioners taking the seats of would-be paying passengers..as applies in the morning rush-period..does not happen..)
..and far from bemoaning the upcoming surge in boomer-gold card numbers..this should be welcomed..all those boomer-cars taken off the road..
..and with a bus..surely any empty seat on any bus trip is a wasted-seat..?..the aim of the relevant authorities who will decide this matter should be to have a full bus on every trip..you’d think ending the afternoon subsidy would be kinda counter-intuitive as far as that goal is concerned..eh..?..
..then there are the actual current numbers..some 178,00..spread over all of auckland..is not much in the grand scale of things..
(once again..where is the problem that needs to be fixed..?..)
..as i said at the top..this ‘bad’ idea should have been dismissed after five minutes consideration..
..as i cannot perceive any valid counter-arguments to the above listed..)
