Politics abhors a vacuum.
In 2019 the People’s Party filled it.
Its platform called for getting big money out of politics ending ‘crony capitalism’ abolishing corporate welfare – stopping the revolving door between government and the private sector and busting up the big Wall Street banks and corporate monopolies.
The People’s Party also pledged to revoke the Trans Pacific Partnership – hike taxes on the rich to pay for a wage subsidy (a vastly expanded Earned Income Tax Credit) for everyone earning below the median and raise taxes on corporations that outsource jobs abroad or pay their executives more than 100 times the pay of typical Americans.
Americans rallied to the cause.
Millions who called themselves conservatives and Tea Partiers joined with millions who called themselves liberals and progressives against a political establishment that had shown itself incapable of hearing what they had been demanding for years.
(ed:..and here in 2017..?..after/if we see the tories retake power or an incrementalist/do-s.f.a./power-for-the-sake-of-power labour coalition takes power..?
..and nothing much changes..?
..then things will happen here..and it will be the millennials who will drive it..(the age-group who face an ever bleaker future due to the minstrations/doings/ineptitude/selling-out of/by the neoliberal tory and labour parties..)
..it is this group who will have the least to lose and the most to gain from radical change..
..and of course the big advantage that most of them don’t seem to realise is that this is eminintly do-able for them..driving that needed change..
..as like the baby-boomers before them..they are a population-bulge..those millennials..
..if you look at nz population broken into ages it looks like a double-ended mushroom..
..so if that worst-case scenario i depicted happens in 2017..i’m picking that anger from those millennials will be there to harvest..
..and it will happen..the question is who/which party will harness it..?..or will a new local peoples’-party form..?
..labour could ride that wave of change/answer that call..but clearly not in present form/policies/personnel..
..the greens could do it..but they will have to offer a coherent/costed tranche of radical-change..and i dunno if they are up for that..
..but if neither labour nor the greens step up to answer that call from the millennials..then as reich predicts for america..here also a new peoples’ party will form..
..and it will be much easier here in nz..as we have mmp..
..and as an aside..should labour stay the same (controlled by neoliberals)..that is when we will see a grand coalition between the tories and labour..
..and as another aside..ya gotta feel for those in their 30’s/40’s..having spent their whole lives to date with the boomers in charge..dictating so much..
..as demographic-derived-power will pass them by..and go to those ‘pesky’ millennials..
..who will rule over them when the boomers kick the can..
..and as i noted..i don’t think most millennials have woken up to these facts yet..
..and the sooner they do..and the sooner they take power..the better..i reckon..eh..?..)
