On the road to becoming the Detroit of agriculture.
(ed:..i have been writing about/warning of this for the last couple of years – our dead-animal industries are fast headed for the gurgler..and not because of the urgings of (‘pesky’) animal-rights/vegan people like me – but because of the development of plant-based ‘meat’/dairy – indistinguishable to/for the diner from the real thing – and in many cases tasting better than the real thing – and minus the environmental-costs of our meat/dairy – and the actual much cheaper cost at point of sale – and of course able to be manufactured near point of consumption – doing away with any need for our dead-animal stuff from the other side of the world –
every which way you look at it – our dead-animal-based versions/economy are/is screwed..
and what else really concerns me is how so many iwi are/have been sinking their treaty-settlement monies into the ‘dairy-boom’ –
– they stand to lose everything – and to be back to square one (economically) – and that is seriously messed-up..
the only ‘up’ side i can see to all this (apart from the animal-cruelties inherent in our dead-animal model coming to an end) is that there will be (sooner than many expect) a hell of a lot of former dead-animal-producing farms/land on the market – and very very cheap to purchase…
and no matter my vegan wants/desires i take no heart from the economic-chaos in/to new zealand that will inevitably ensue..
and our ‘industry-leaders’/politicians of all stripes..?…they haven’t got a fucken clue what is coming up –
– just today jacinda ardern (the future-face of labour?) is in the mainstream media vowing she will always ‘support the dairy industry’..(!)..
which is kinda like supporting the bridle-making/stables industries at the advent of the motor-car..eh..?
and this piece from dr rosie bosworth updating/summarising just how fast this is all happening is a ‘must-read!’..and should be shared with everyone you know..especially anyone with connections to iwi who may not yet have followed this dead-end path – and thrown their settlement monies away..)
Colleague and Christchurch based technology strategist Ben Reid recently tweeted that New Zealand is in danger of fast becoming the ‘Detroit of Agriculture’ – a rustbelt left behind after production has moved elsewhere’.
Unfortunately I am inclined to agree.
These technologies are designed for a living breathing moo cow.
A pasture (or cage) roaming egg laying chicken.
A spring leaping lamb.
A paradigm based on outdoor fruit orchards and picturesque vineyards.
And vast acreages of monoculture vegetable fields.
Technologies designed for a system that will fast become to food production what the cassette type has become to Spotify.
A paradigm on the brink of extinction.
Over the past 18 months I’ve already written about how the cow that has so lucratively helped bolster NZ’s bottom line for decades was about to be disrupted by tech entrepreneurs – mainly in Silicon Valley.
Start ups like Impossible Foods, Memphis Meats, Kite Hill, Willow Cup and Perfect Day (previously branded Muufri) are now successfully producing tasty healthy and environmentally friendly protein – milk and dairy product alternatives and substitutes such as beef – chicken – milk and dairy products that taste like the real thing – look like the real thing.
Except without the animal.
