The Commerce Commission has been running a project focusing on the mobile shops – hoping to improve their compliance with the Credit Contract and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA) and Fair Trading Act.
It has found widespread problems and has taken action against a number – Best Buys pleaded guilty to 16 charges earlier this year for misleading customers.
But Evans said the traders made their money targeting the people who could least afford them.
‘They come in numbers.
There’s not one salesman to one household – there will be two or three come up to your door to do the hard sell.
I’ve complained no ends of times and the Commerce Commission have done good work – but the reality is they are not regulated by anyone’.
