More than 50 people including locals – joined Direct Animal Action to show their opposition to the rodeo.
The group want a government-led national ban on rodeo events which are regular during the summer holidays.
Spokesperson Kathleen Lafferty said the events were incredibly cruel to animals.
‘Over the last two seasons four animals have died because of injuries sustained during rodeo events’ Lafferty said.
‘In December, a horse died and only two weeks ago a bull broke his leg and was euthanised’.
A petition by the SPCA, Safe and Farmwatch is now at 42,000 signatures.
(ed:..i fully support those protesting against this barbaric/cruel ‘entertainment’..more power to them..!..i say..and i want to see rodeo gone..’tis a blight overdue to be removed..and is up there with bear-baiting as unconscionable-cruelty to/of animals..
and as a side-issue..we could have a first in nz protest-history..
..as in what will sue bradford do if she goes to the rodeo with her husband/fellow-protester bill..who is a big rodeo supporter/participant..?
..will bradford follow her normal instincts and join the protesters..?
..or will she find herself in the rare position for her of being protested against..?
..and will she heckle/sneer at the protesters..(in support of her husband bill)..?
..will this protesting in her face change/alter her views on the treatment of animals..?..and maybe rodeos..?..or not..?..and if ‘not’..why..?
(i mean..she might even stop eating them..!..those animals..if she thinks on a bit..eh..?)
..so many questions…and still no answers).
This week on New Year’s Day, animal rights activists from the group Direct Animal Action will demonstrate outside the Warkworth Rodeo.
The activists plan to display large photographic images showing animal cruelty documented at the Warkworth rodeo and at other rodeos across New Zealand.
They want the government to implement a nationwide ban on rodeo.
‘Investigations carried out by activists all over the country have shown time and again that animal suffering at rodeos is actually the norm. This just isn’t acceptable’ says Direct Animal Action spokesperson Kathleen Lafferty.
‘Rodeos are legalised cruelty and animals shouldn’t have to suffer for our entertainment’.
‘We want the government to ban rodeo in our country.
With even parts of the U.S. now banning rodeo it’s actually an embarrassment that we’re falling so far behind overseas trends’.
