Crabb indicated on Saturday that the cuts would not go ahead.
He told a local radio reporter in Pembrokeshire where he is the local MP: ‘We are not going to be going ahead with these cuts to the disability benefits that were proposed on budget day – the prime minister has confirmed that himself and I was very clear when I discussed the offer of a job with the prime minister this morning that we were not going to go ahead with he cuts that were being proposed’.
The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for the chancellor to step down after Duncan Smith’s resignation – blaming him as the architect of austerity – for the disability cuts that had prompted a rebellion on Conservative back benches.
On Saturday Corbyn said he would be ‘back on his case in parliament next week’ over planned spending cuts.
In an interview with Sky News he welcomed Duncan Smith’s resignation and added: ‘I wonder where his conscience has been hiding for the past six years.
I think he has done the right thing to resign because after all this is a man who has presided over some fairly appalling policies but this latest example of cutting the personal independence payments of a very large number of people … is shocking’ he added.
‘He has resigned but I really think the problem is the chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne’.
(ed:..and in local outrageous-things-tory-bastards say..i think a special crocodile-tears-award should be struck for paula bennett and those other tory-bastards who argued last week that we shouldn’t do anything about the sugar-pushers..’cos it will hurt the poor’…(!)
..this from a government/ideology who along with labour (lest we forget..eh?) have been waging war on the poorest for coming up four decades now..and who clearly don’t give a fuck about the miseries suffered by the worst-off each/every day…if they did..they would do/have done something about it..
(and yes i have a special loathing for clark/those in labour who both cut benefits (ending special-allowances that could be applied for..on the part of clark as p.m..and i must admit i had a choking/neoliberal-overdose at the time when clark argued/justified ending the allowances option..as a matter of ‘fairness’..and ‘creating a level playing field for beneficiaries’..and it does make the bile rise in the back of the throat..eh..?..such a degree of utter-cant..)
..and now we have paula bennett wringing her hands (and doing nothing) for the poor…(and i feel the bile rising again..)
..one of the main reasons the poorest buy that sugar-laden/addictive crap..is because they are poor..and it is cheap..
..end poverty..(with a living-wage/universal basic income)..and then sit back and watch all/most of the problems caused by poverty..melt away..
..g.b.shaws’ observation that ‘poverty is the root of all evil’still stands as a maxim..
..and the ‘evil’ that is the chronic ill-health/outcomes of/from obesity is just another manifestation of that truth..
..and bennett and those other tory bastards in national (and labour..who last election promised to do the same as the tories..to raise benefits only by the rate of inflation..) all know this to be a fact..
..and they know what needs to be done to fix our country..
..it is just as they specialise in handwringing and crocodile tears..that/but deep-down they just don’t fucken care..
..and screwing over the poorest is a core pillar of their fucked tory/neoliberal ideology..
..in which cutting benefits for the disabled is something these bastards dream about doing..is permanently on their wish-list..
..and bennett defending the sugar-pushers in their screwing over of the poorest..is just par for the course..
..and i should add the disclaimer that i think a sugar-tax is entirely the wrong way to go..(and just leaves the government open to the same profiteering-charges the sugar-pushers are guilty of..and does sweet fuck all about the actual problem..)
..limiting the amounts of sugar/salt that is allowed to be in products is the only effective way to tackle the sugar/obesity-problem..end of story..(let’s see bennett handwring her way around that one..eh..?)
..but once again..this is something these tory-bastards will not do..owned as they are by those sugar-pushing interests..and going on their past record i expect little better from labour..
..just more hand-wringing/crocodile-tears from both..
