ed: paul henry from tv3 has been on leave for a couple of weeks..
..and co-host rawdon christie from tv one has been absent since shortly after the news of his upcoming axing..
so we have had replacement hosts – ranging from the extremely able – to behind the sofa squinting at through parted-fingers in horror examples of the genre..
we’ll start with the good:
this past week has seen alison mau chairing for henry – and she has done extremely well – and has run a show far different from henry –
guests/interview subjects were not just surfaces/foils (for henry) to bounce his energiser-bunny/rightwing-propagandising schtick off..
and the change was refreshing – maybe it is her talkback-hosting experience coming through – but mau gives interview-subjects the room/comfort-zone to impart what they know/have to tell..
which is as i said a refreshing change from henry..
in fact should/when henry walk(s) mau is the obvious perfect fit for the job..
the subbing duties the week before were a different story..
it was ‘sainso’ sainsbury..not so much a blast from the past as a (hair-rimmed) gasp from the past..
he was painful to watch – that grinning moustache/time-filler attempting to cover for so so much else/more..and pretty much failing dismally on all fronts..
but the crown – the must-watch! example of trainwreck-televison is over on tvone..
..for some unfathomable reason they have roped in a sports-person called ‘scotty’..to fill in for christie..
(disclaimer: i have seen his face before but ‘sports’ has me reaching for the remote..so of him i know little..)
..’scotty’ tried to bring that faux-sports-banter (one reason i remote-reach) to this gig..
..and if ‘sainso’ was 5/10 on the painful-to-watch scale – ‘scotty’ is up around 8.5-9..
..it is so bad i found myself frozen/unable to not watch/forgetting to breath..
..the tension just builds and builds – you think it can’t get any worse..that the ‘small-talk’ could not be more excruciating..
..but no..it just keeps on delivering..
..and if you are at all a fan of trainwreck-television – you’ll stumble over a lot before finding something this bad that is so good/such compelling viewing..
