The former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is poised to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations after topping the sixth ballot.
(ed: as guterres lead the country with the most sane drug laws on the planet – portugal – i am hoping he will also bring that experience/ knowledge to the top u.n. job – and will help moves to end the madness of global drug prohibitions..
(..i really couldn’t see staunch-prohibitionist clark doing much on this imperative..could you..?)
..and it is for these reasons i have been rooting for guterres since day one – his former experience as un high commissioner for refugees is the other part of the package that makes/made him – on paper -the best candidate for the job.
now we will see if he is able to live up to those expectations..)
The Security Council will move a formal recommendation tomorrow after a sixth poll this morning showed he would attract no vetoes by the five permanent five members.
Guterres – a former UN High Commissioner for Refugees – has been ranked first in every ballot.
