For the past half decade, the technology industry has been racing to build better cameras into the hardware we use every day.
Yet the surveillance age has inspired an odd cottage industry battling against this trend: a glut of cheap stickers and branded plastic slides designed to cover up the front-facing cameras on phones – laptops and even televisions.
For years security researchers have shown that hackers can hijack the cameras to spy on whomever is on the other end.
To put that in perspective think of all the things your devices have seen you do.
Such warnings have finally caught on.
Last month – the FBI director – James Come – told an audience: ‘I put a piece of tape over the camera because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera’.
(ed:..i have been doing this for years – covering up the camera-lenses on desktops/laptops i use..
..this ever since i read how easy they are to be hacked – to be spied on..
(and if the head of the fbi does it – for the same reasons – it is just commonsense
..and i have developed a hack to foil these spooks/whoever..
..i use what i call the whoar-security-device..this is a judiciously-folded whoar business card…placed to cover the lens..
..easy-as – cheap-as = piece of mind/a metaphorical-finger to whoever.
(gaffer-tape does seem a tad over-kill – eh..?..and all that sticky-residue to deal with..why would you..?…)
..and of course the beauty of my whoar-card security-system is that it is totally portable..
..finish your work on any device – and then just slip the whoar security-card into yr pocket before you walk off..
..and it’s there ready to use – whenever you need it..
..and if you wish to skype/tele-conference..just remove the card – and then replace it when you have finished..
